Right guys so...

Finally got round to building my PC. Mike and I have been trying for 2 days now and heres the problem..

Put in New motherboard, memory and Processor from Jules, got a new HDD, CD rom drive and the working graphics card from Sammy all of which work and have been tested in someone elses PC or were working when gave to me. Only things I havent changed are the case and the power supply. Wont boot :) gets to the black windows loading screen with the green bar and shuts down after about 5 seconds. Mikes been in the bios and changed things and reset the cmos, managed to half install windows upto the first restart, it went to autoboot and shut down in the same place... same when changed memory and same when tried the other HDD. Is it just a case of getting a new case and power supply or does anyone have any other ideas??

help!!! LOL

Thanks in advance peeps... this is really getting to me now!!!

do you have a detailed spec list of the complete build, including power supply wattage? sounds like it's a power issue but may also be down to the earthing of the motherboard, but sudden cut of power usually points to power supply running out of juice :(

Yep my money is with the PSU.  But as Needsie says, let us have a full spec list and then we can perhaps come up with a more informed idea.

On recent experience, I would be interested to hear of your Mobo/HDD combo too?!

Nvidia Mobo link

Nivdia 8600 link

230 PSU - ouch!  I have made a ball park calculation based on what I suspect the components are that you have in terms of CPU mem config, etc and I am already at 253W.  This is without taking into account any extra cards you may have on the board like sound, TV tuners, etc. Try at least 400w and then maybe you may get somewhere.

What interface is that HDD (do you have the full model info for it?) - I'm guessing SATA based on the MoBo you have, but knowing which drive it is exactly will be helpful.

What CPU are you running on it - again I am guessing it is an AMD based on the Mobo - but which one?

Hit me up on TS or XFire (if you can!) so I can get more details and then I can make a more accurate calculation for you, but it really is looking like ur PSU is the issue hun.

ok slightly better parts list

if you are using the stuff i gave you

Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4
AMD athlon 64 x2 5200+ BE (2.7Ghz version)
Kingston 2gb (2x1gb) Ddr2 1066mhz Hyperx Memory Cl5
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro

plus whatever hdd/odd and other stuff you've added

definatley a new psu me thinks lusty. at least a 450w. something like this

Thanks for the info Jules - based on this my estimated calculation comes in at 257W.

Jules has hit the nail on the replacement PSU but my link is a bit cheaper!  Now you just need to flex your plastic Lusty, install and off you go.  ;-)

I hope this has helped.

I am guessing you have OC'd the CPU.  What stepping processor do you have?  GO or B3 and what CPU voltage are you running your OC at?

What block config do you have the memory in?  2x4Gb, 4x2GB, etc.

Is the sound card in a PCI slot?

What fans do you have in your case?  Size and quantity.  Any fan controllers?  I take it as you don't mention it that you are on air and not WC?

Do you have any USB connections that draw power?

Any DVD/Blue-ray, etc?  Please specify type and quantity?

And finally, any cathodes?

Am I right in thinking that ur GFx takes two 6-pin connectors?  And if so, the specs on your PSU indicate that it has just two 6-pin connectors and also 2x 8pin.  Is this right?

Or you could just follow Spree's link and work it out for yourself.  But as my last question makes reference, it is not just about raw power but availability of connectors!

You got a link for that Lusty - cos be VERY wary of generic PSU's.  They may be rated at 500W but rarely do they deliver.  They often suffer from poor ratings on the rails and lack efficiency and stability.  Put simply, they can cause more problems than they are worth.  As it is on the Overclockers website I would like to think it is half decent, but give us a ganders and we can give u our views.  We would not want u spending money thinking u are getting a good deal just to find u are going to still have issues.

What case you do you have at the mo?  As providing the cooling and space is generally ok, then you should have no real cause to change that.  I would be more inclined to invest my money in a decent PSU (as per our links) than trying to do something on the cheap.  Many ppl under estimate the importance of a decent PSU - they are often the cause of BSODs.

On a more positive note - we look forward to having u back soon once you get it sorted.   :biggrin..:

It's saying that it's only utilising 408watts, so eighty % efficiency on 750w means 600w, so I got 192w to play with :-)

Ask Jules

What block config do you have the memory in?  2x4Gb, 4x2GB, etc.
2x2

Is the sound card in a PCI slot?
onboard

What fans do you have in your case?  Size and quantity.  Any fan controllers?  I take it as you don't mention it that you are on air and not WC?
3. 1 massive thing on the processor... ask jules... front and side average size

Do you have any USB connections that draw power?
only mouse

Any DVD/Blue-ray, etc?  Please specify type and quantity?
nope even took the cd/dvd rom out so its just cd for now

And finally, any cathodes?
one ... oh no... thought you meant catheters lol

Am I right in thinking that ur GFx takes two 6-pin connectors?  And if so, the specs on your PSU indicate that it has just two 6-pin connectors and also 2x 8pin.  Is this right?
