The specs seem quite good, but as with all ati/amd cards, they can't seem to get the power to the games, also, driver support has gone out the window since amd took over, so ultimately it's upto you, good value for the specs but don't expect performance to be retrospective to the specs.

Can't say how they compare to the equivalent Nvidia but I've not had any trouble with my ATI so far.

I upgraded from a 9600GT and imho the ATI catalyst software is way better than Nvidia's, it seems to have loads more features plus better support for HDTV giving fast and reliable display detection and switching.

I was gonna go for the 5670 also, but found this...

http://uk.asus.com/p...v2bZ&templete=2

I was lucky and found it on sale under 100 quid at Pixmania (140 there now), but under 110 elsewhere.

I'm really glad I stetched the budget though... it has double the amount of stream processors than the 5670 and I love the voltage tweak/overdrive software, increasing memory and clock speeds by 25-40% when you need to whilst monitoring temp/fan, and the Copper core fansink keeps it cooler than stock. Solid 3yr warranty to boot.

You know my thoughts already Jules.  I did suggest an extra 20 notes for another card (XFX Radeon HD 5770), but don't wish to be held responsible for you having a tower case inserted!  There will always be the spend more money and could get something better in terms of performance and longevity, etc.  But ultimately, you can't have what you can't afford.

But on the ATI/Nvidia debate the new Nvidia cards  (GTX 590 1.5 and 1.3 Gb editions for example) just seem to be clawing back the massive advantage that ATI have had for some time.  Yes, there are definate cases of games prefering Nvidia to ATI and vice versa.  Equally, there is the whole personal preference thing.  I used to run AMD chips until the i7 came along and kicked the arses of AMD.  And for me Intel still have the advantage over AMDs, but no doubt in time the shift will return AMD and so on.

The debate(s) will rage on.... MASS debate anyone?!  Time for a new thread perhaps rather than hijacking Jules' one for views....

No debate here Jason matey, ati and nvidia will always be at loggerheads, but since I've used both ati and nvidia, I found that nv charges higher prices for something much cheaper on ati's side, but the reason is that nv have the ability to transfer such low numbers in to high performance, seems like ati/amd are like muscle cars, whats the point in trying to put 500bhp v8 engine in a car that can't put the power down on the road?

i've used both and find nvidia has real trouble outputting a true hd signal to a hd tv. the screen resolution has to be a custum res for nvid cards, not so with ati cards. you get more bang for your buck with ati at the moment, nvidia seem to have priced themselves out of the market at all levels and seem to be playing catch up.

i'm pretty much set on an ati card as all the nvid cards i've had have failed, yet to have an ati card fail. so it seems, imho, that ati has nvidia beat on price and quality if not performance aswell.

and as to your "seems like ati/amd are like muscle cars, whats the point in trying to put 500bhp v8 engine in a car that can't put the power down on the road?" quote needsie the IT lad at school has a friend that has a nova van with 505bhp. that's fun to drive and he has no problems with getting the power onto the road.(i watched a vid of it today. all i have to say is i want a go)

not the same vid but a 619bhp nova.

Jolly good, it wasn't that I was saying that putting a powerful engine in a small car would be difficult, I was merely putting it into a concept that muscle cars are cars that are renown for all power and no optimisation, whereas something like a Nissan with half the horsepower would get the same performance, but you make a very convincing case :-)
