Hey guys a friend of mine is having some second thoughts about a purchase he wants to do for his PC.

He wants to Crossfire 2 Asus Radeon HD 5970's on a EVGA X58 1366 LGA 3 WAY Classified motherboard, using a Intel 975 CPU at 4.0 GHz

Together with a Corsair 1000 Watt powersupply, he's wondering if he will expierence problems with running a system like this, for example slowness on the cards due to
not high enough CPU speed(this means he doesnt want it to lag (obviously) and choke on information, etc. ), or some kind of bottlenecking, etc.

Any suggestions would help him alot, thanks!

TBH i think the 1000w psu will run it easy. the new ati cards arnt as power hungry as previous.

BTW WTH he wants to crossfire 2 top of the range gfx cards for, save the moneys and get a epic monitor or sumthin, good sound system blah blah blah

Yes, easy. He doesnt need to get a 975 either, he may as well get a 920, they will overclock to 4ghz with a reasonable cooler and save him over £200 in the proccess.

More money than sense so mate.At that res with one monitor he is wasting his money and wont see much,if any improvement.
Tell him to use the saved money to get a good watercooling setup and get the 975 upto 4.5-4.6ghz 24/7

Yep - see comments from Percy Pie Man and Mr Game.  2 top end GFx cards in cross fire?!  Is he planning to run his own IMAX cinema screen?  One of those cards will not even break a sweat at the resolution u give, particularly if it is lower as u suggest it may be.

TBH I nvr bought into the realms of 'crossfire' in the age of Voodoo 3 cards and I dont really buy into it these days either (with very limited exceptions).  It is just another way for a marketeers to sell u more stuff than you need (says someone with a business degree and specialism in marketing!) and excite the generally unsuspecting public with big numbers.  I mean how many noobs are lured by the large memory numbers of some GFx cards without thought to all the other aspects of said card that play a far more imporant role  in it's abilities for the average user?  (Sorry got a bit carried away there - *** STEPS DOWN FROM SOAP BOX***)

Anyways, either go with the watercooling suggestion, or tell him to donate his excess funds to me or clan (FG) to buy a stonger cage to keep @rry in!  LMAO

Oh and the CPU and PSU will do the job fine.

Correct me if I'm wrong here guys but aren't most of the modern graphics cards like having two cards anyways?

Plus a lot of games don't support Crossfire and or have serious issues running when crossfire is enabled graphics artifacts CTD etc.

Best going with game and Preci's advice :)

The top end cards do have dual gpus but this does not run as crossfire/sli.

Most modern game scale extremly well now with the Ati cards.
For instance two 5770's will beat a 5850 in most games and nearly match a 5870 in some.

That's if its supported by the game... Though most newer games fully support it and older ones that don't usually have had support added in a patch.

tell him to watercool his processor and motherboard (northbridge at the very least) and overclock it as far as it can go safely
that'll get him alot more gain than a second 5970
