For a multi billion dollar market leading company it amazes me how useless Microsoft can be.
You receive 'important security updates' to fix known issues that could allow malicious software to run... and then they won't install. Day after day the install fails.
First one was KB972580.
'No problem' says Microsoft in their support site, there are known problems with installing this update. Excellent methinks, they've seen this coming and are on the case already.
Support site advises that if I have Access Runtime 2003 installed, and Security Update for Office 2003 Web Components (KB947319), then I need to follow some simple instructions and all will be well.
Except... I don't have Access runtime and KB947319 cannot be removed.
No problem... help is at hand, click on 'How to obtain help and support for this security update'. What great service!
Just click on the link, select UK... and.... get ready for great customer service....

Have you tried downloading the updates manually and installing them?
This often resolves problems for me

ok thanks dude.... it hasn't worked but it has thrown up the error that's causing the problem... 'invalid drive C:'.
My system drive is D: so I guess it's looking for a drive that's not there.
I could rename the drive to C:... but will that not cause me loads of problems with software pointing to the old D drive?
I spose I could rename it, install the update and then change it back to D?

Could try that... but I'm sure theres a registry setting that controls where it looks for default, been so long since I used XP I'm not 100% sure where it is.
