Hi guys

Anyone out there using LINUX in anger as i`m thinking of trying it on an old PC, have been meaning to do this for ages.

I`ve got ubuntu 9.04 and it loads ok from a disc, think its also got open office 3 on it as well.

Anything i need to watch out for ............. before i install it fully ? :)

Antivirus software compatability ( I got avast ) ?

Firewall ?

Network issues ?

Mainly gonna be used for back ups ,surfing and playing with software stuff.

Is it memory hungry ?

Anything else I should know

only time i have used linux was in college and we just messed with it, didnt put it on the net or anythin we just put it on see what it was like so i cant really help you on that one.

thing i did find is the only good thing about it is its easy to set stuff like servers and so on. there arnt that many virus's for it so you should be ok with AV and so, should be ok and will be fun to try as well.

best of luck with it.

9.10 is slick.
I use it for when i need to do Uni work, less distractions.

Takes a while to get set up but for working i prefer it to windows.

Theres hundreds of tutorials online and it doesn't take long to get to grips with installing some stuff that isn't in Add/Remove through the terminal.

Any problems with non compatible applications (iTunes, Dreamweaver, Steam) just run them through wine.

Happy Days.
Anything else as Blade or Raith, they know a lot more than me (and most) about Linux.

Thanks for the response peeps.

I`ve got it running on another pc now, seems wayyyyy faster than windows was and (touch wood ) I`ve had now conflict yet  :)

Still getting to grips with office suite - just gotta remember to save in the format i want, otherwise its ok.

Only issue i have still got is Avast antivirus doesn`t like it.

Any suggestions for antivirus ?

if you feel the need for an AntiVirus on Linux not that one is needed use ClamAV

The Webserver and the TMF Server use ClamAV
