im lookin at a Core 2 Duo or a Quad Core as my next CPU.

for Core 2 Duo im lookin at E8400, Wolfdale Core, S775, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz, 6MB Cache, 9x Multiplier
and im also lookin at Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700, Kentsfield Core, S775, 2.66 GHz 1066MHz 8MB Cache, 10x Multiplier

bum im not sure really as there about the same price where i look like on scan, ebuyer.

so if anyone could tell me which one to go for then that would be a great help and also if you can find it me for under £140 that would be even better tongue.gif

i'd have to disagree with that. i ordered all my bits for my new build last year from them and they forgot to put the cpu in the box. when i phoned them to let them know they, expected me to pay £10 more to have it sent out with 24 hour delivery after already paying for next day delivery for the original box of stuff. apart from that they are alright.

E8400 is what i'd get. They clock to like 4Ghz on air. Not many programs im aware of (or use) are suited fully to QuadCore so its a bit meh

It depends on what he is using the pc for.If its the likes of video encoding and other multithreading software the quad would be off benifit. It also will be a while yet before mainstream games will take use of quadcore.

well it will be mainly for gaming and photoshop really tbh, wanted and needed a upgrade for afew months now and it just seems about now that my pc has a lag developing on some games i have played for years, i know that maybe due to dust killin air flow but i have noticed it slowing quite alot recently so i am due and upgrade, CPU i have now is Pent D dual core 3.2ghz but i have just overclocked it to 4ghz to speed it up somewhat more, will try it on this for a while but i will be needing one soon.

it will be mainly for gaming so what you think quad or core 2 duo?

If it's only for gaming, go for the dual core. Quad cores are mainly used by those who multi-task on the extreme side (i.e. cad, video editing, etc) or those with more money than sense tongue.gif laugh.gif

Around 80% of software is still only designed to run on a single core so unless you plan on running a shed load of apps at the same time, stick with the dual. wink.gif

Could go in depth into the pro's & cons of each type, but meh.. we'll keep it simple laugh.gif

I usually use one of the following 2 site for buying bits off.. never had any problems with either:

Thanks for that site Des, same price as scan nearly just a few pennys but i still think i am goin to go with scan, easyer rather than waitin i can go get it there and then install it bish bosh bash gaming again in afew mins tongue.gif

so i guess i will go for the core 2 duo then save me some ££ as well may lever it standard for a while and then overclock it see what improvements i get tongue.gif

Thanks guys but if u do find it cheaper somewhere please let me know

O shiz, just realised my Motherboard wont run a FBS 1333mhz so it looks like i need a new motherboard now, so i may as well go big and get one which will last a while like SLI ready and also one that can run my memory, DDR2 at 1066mhz so i can get the full speed out of it rather than 800mhz so its lookin like a big spend for me now, probably over £100 for the motherboard and then once i got the motherboard i would maybe need a new Powersupply and then on top of that there is then the new CPU its self.

never really thought of that till now Fudge cake, guess i could get away with not getting a new PSU but i will need a new one if i did got SLI.

any ideas on a motherboard from what i just said?

SLI <-- Doesnt have to be but prefaired
FBS 1333MHz + <-- Defo need
DDR2 1066MHz + <-- Defo need
Socket 775 <-- Defo need

Go for the E8400 - these bad boys have a long history of being very receptive to BIG overclocks (4GHz plus on air).  You can pick them up for around £140 too.

Could always go the cheaper route & get a Phenom + motherboard.. I've got an AMD phenom 9950BE quad core (2.6ghz c/w an unlocked multiplier) & an ASUS M3N-HT deluxe M/B.

Add to that my 4 x 2gbs Geil Black Evo 1066mhz ram (unganged) & my Dual GTX260 and it's one rapid system  cool.gif

Didn't cost an arm & a leg to buy either
