Have just ordered me a self build i7 rig. Will be expecting delivery thereof next Tuesday so may go offline for a bit during build.
Now off to salivate a lot until then!

I run a dual setup at the mo & will shortly be removing XP Pro as I no longer need it. Vista does require a bit of tinkering to get it running how you want though so try the following site for hints and tricks:
Prehaps setup a dual boot for Windows 7 yet as it's still in beta, you don't wanna be stuck with that as your only OS if they screw up!! (I did that when XP was in beta - bad mistake!)
P.S.
The psu you've ordered may be a bit weak with what you're planning to run - may want to upgrade it to a 850watt or greater as that setup is gonna require a fair bit of juice under load.

Thanks for the advice mate. Do you really think I need to beef up on the PSU? The GFx seems to draw 305W at max load based on tech reviews I have seen. Wot is the drawn CPU wise, etc? Anyone know?

this might help jason

i gives me a value of 278W for my system so i don't know how good it is. i think it is better to look at Amps rather than watts on psu's
(But it flees in the meantime: irretrievable time flies)

No but i'm running my rig with a 580watt hiper and have had no issuses. The only real difference between the two rigs is the gfx cards though (mine being a overclocked 8800gt).
Try this also(as a guide) http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
Ooops a wee bit slow with my reply but try that too.

On the amp front on the PSU I have ordered we have:
'the unit features a total of four +12v rails capable of delivering 20 amps each, with a maximum load across all rails of 52amps. The +3.3v and +5v rails are equally well equipped with 26amps and 30amps respectively'.
Got 2x 6+2 PCI-E connectors which I will need for Gfx.
PSU eff.: 88%

Calculators came back with a 412w rating so I should be fine even with a CPU OC. Providing I don't double up on the GFx.
Thanks for all the advice fellas.
Will be reviewing OS next...

A rough guide (and off the top of my head) for power comsumption is:
M/B & CPU: up to 200watts
RAM: 30 watts
DVD/Floppy/Zip & HDD drives: 30watts each
Upgraded cooling + fans (case or additional): 50 watts
USB devices: 10-30watts (possible more depending on what you have hooked up)
Additional PCI/e cards: 10-50watts
GFX card: 180-380watt (depending on card)
Add about 150 watts to the total - this will save it from any surges or power spikes. I've given very conservative values for each device but it's held me in good stead - not blown a PSU in around 5yrs!! lol
And if your thinking of going down the SLI route, add around 300 watts to the total (most people say they won't but as GFX cards become cheaper, SLI becomes much more affordable)
Amount of amps required is a totally different ballpark - got a list floating about somewhere but anywhere from 50-100 should be future proof (for a few years that is!!
