When I re-formatted and installed Windows recently I didn't load the Asus MB chipset driver from the support disk. This was because on the 1st attempt, after a reboot the system wouldnt start... giving error 'invalid boot disk'. So I had to reformat and re-install again.
Anyway everything works fine except the spdif digital out on nthe motherboard (connected to the input on my gpu card so it goes out the hdmi port) is no longer transmitting multichannel audio, ie no dolby on movies. I'm guessing this might be because I didnt install the MB driver.
Question is, can I do that now to see if it solves the problem or would I have to re-install windows?
I've tried everything else, there's no longer an spdif out option in PowerDVD and it was there before. There's no 'enable spdif out' in the bios settings either although I don't know if there was one before. Also SoundMax control panel apparently should have digital out settings but they are missing.
Help please... I want my Dolby baaaaack!!!!!
Motherboard driver/SPDIF out

have you tried going to the asus website and seeing if there is a newer version of the drivers. i installed my audio drivers from the gigabyte website as they had updated them since the board was made.

I take it from your comment it was previously in the BIOS settings?
If it is no longer there, do you need a BIOS update perhaps?

No there's no option in the bios, there never was and the spdif worked fine before.
I'm sure its probably the VIA 4in1 chipset driver needs installing, it must be using windows default driver at the moment so the onboard 6 channel codec may not be working, hence only 2 channel sound from the SPDIF out..
Is there any problem with installing the Via chipset driver now? Or will I have to reinstall windows first? I heard somewhere that system drivers have to be installed in a specific order.
Bios is another problem actually, the Asus update program will only flash the rom correctly with the old bios file, any of the newer versions fail to verify, but there should be no need for me to update it anyway.

Tim,
You will be fine installing via 4 - 1, create a restore point first just incase, then d/l and install via pack, you will find on first reboot it will install all southbridge devices, PCI, ISA, SPI,SM bus as well as DMA controllers and IDE/Sata controllers, and the last which you need AC97 / HD Audio sound interface, windows will have already installed these devices but missed the HD audio, let me know how it goes mate.

thats the first thing i do when i reinstall any of my operating systems, i check to see if everything is installed in my device manager, it doesnt matter whether you install it with your operating system or not, as long as it gets installed, so check the mobo manufacturers website for the latest drivers.

Latest Via Hyperion drivers may not work so well with older chipsets so I Installed 4in1 driver from the Asus support disk and all is now well with the spdif.
Cheers guys.
Weird that the bios wont flash with any except the original version, got no problems with it though so I'll probably leave it as is.
