i'm running a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ (Brisbane) on the stock cooler. it is still getting 30 degrees on idle.
any suggestions as to what to get. i don't have a huge amount of money at the money so no water cooling suggestions.looking at no more than £25.
i was looking at something like this. click here

cheapest way to check wether your current cooler is sufficient or not
use Arctic Silver 5
been using that for the past 4-5 years and never had any problems
i will try this later when the kids are in bed. i have some arctic cooling mx-2 left from when i built the machine.

it's not the idle temp i'm worried about. it's the load temp. 82 degrees is very high. the amd recomended operating temp is 50-68 degrees.

I recently had to install a new heatsink, get a really thick soft tissue that if you rub or shake it little dust doesnt come off, I used really soft toilet paper wipe it over the CPU and it comes off easy but just remember a single hair could effect the cpu heat, so make sure the tissue doesnt leave dust.
Applying thermal paste, do line method on Quad and the dot mehtod on Duo

it only goes that high when playing grid and such. it's fine on tm and bf2 and general browsing.

whats your video card mate?? sounds almost as if higher end games are choking your cpu.. how much ram ?? heat sinks on the ram ?? aftermarkt cooling on cpu ( we know this isnt true already)?? .. how many case fans you got blowing air into and out of your case?? give me a count of every fan its location, and direction of flow , are you trying too cool via positive pressure cooling ?/ or negative pressure cooling ?? might want to consider adding some extra air flow fans to the bottom of the case with a drill, and a couple of zip ties. you can move alot of air around a system this way and pretty quiet too.. no body has asked but i will , how big is the pile of dust on the cpu heat sink ,and other places dust settles.. lol sorry had to ask .. oh and for the love of gad (long story) dont ever put a hoover in your case.. no matter what ... period ..

my video vard is a XFX 9800gt 'xxx' this is operating at 'normal' temps as it comes factroy OC'ed. 4Gb of ram corsair xms2 with their own heat sinks(damn you 32 bit xp). stock cpu cooler. 3 case fans, one at the front (120mm) intake. one side fan (90mm) exhaust and one rear (120mm) exhaust.
their is also a 120mm fan on the psu but i don't know wether this blowing into the case or not. no dust in the case as i've just cleaned it out. no hoover in the case. took everything out and the blew the dust out. cleaned all the fans with a brush. took the heatsink fan off to clean it.(so as not to build up any static charge). all fans were marked to insure they were replaced in th right direction.
let me know if this is enough info.

here is a screen shot of my temps using everest, core temp and HWMonitor. i have ringed the temps. i think the second temp on everest is for the second core i could be wrong. this just on idle with a room temp of 20 degrees.
thanks for the help everybody.

so if i were you , i would flip the side case fan to draw air right into and at the cpu area of the board .. we count the psu fan as an exaust.... doing this will equalize the air pressures inside and out, so there is free flow of moving air from 2 directions , and one of them is right at a hot spot. this will move more hot air away from heatsinks to be sucked out by exaust fans at the back.
i would also check your psu make sure that fan is turning , and stick your hand at the back .. feel air comming out ?? if not you need to do some more cleaning around the psu grids internally, and externally so it does work , or the next thing you will buy is a new psu..
a nice neat wiring job works wonders as well .. zip tie any cables out of air flow areas ( in other words get them tied off to the side so air can move around)

i've neatened the cables up. i will post a pic of the inside of my case later when i get back from school. i cleaned the psu yesterday while i had everything out, there was a fair bit of dust clogging the sides of it (the whole thing is mesh). i was looking at a new cooler that would push air out towards the rear fan.

here is the inside now it's been cleaned. the only cable i couldn't reroute was the sata for my HDD. i have also swapped the side fan so it blows into the case. i now have 2 fans pulling air in and one on the back exhasting air, out plus the psu.
