The future of Celebrity Big Brother is in doubt after the final, won by Ulrika Jonsson, was watched by two million fewer people than any other in the show's history. Only 3.5 million saw the former weathergirl emerge triumphant as the surprise winner; actor Verne Troyer, the much-fancied bookies' favourite, finished in fourth place.

In sharp contrast, the past five Celebrity Big Brother finals have pulled in more than five million viewers: Chantelle Houghton's 2006 victory was witnessed by 6.8 million and 5.8 million tuned in to see Shilpa Shetty win in 2007. An insider told The Sun: "This series has basically been a flop and bosses are pretty unhappy as it costs so much to make. They expected ratings to be down a bit as the format is getting tired, but losing two million was unthinkable. There are also problems with the audience. Most people who watch it are old and not attractive to advertisers. C4 and producers will now meet to find out what went wrong and there are concerns that CBB may bite the dust."

At one point, the ratings for CBB6 slumped to an all-time low of 1.2 million viewers - beaten by Victorian Farm, BBC2's historical experiment programme. The series average is 3.6 million compared to 4.8 million for CBB5 in 2007. This Big Brother incarnation is more expensive to make than its non-celebrity summer version as the celebrities' fees have to be paid; it was reported that Ukrika Jonsson cost a massive £175,000 for appearing in the three-week show. i'm with ozza on this, the bb franchise is dead and has been for the last two normal shows and the celebrity version was only funny for the first one (Jack Dee).
