Everyone should have this! If I had not found this it's quite likely my pc would have died an early death.

I ran this program a while back whilst playing TMNF and discovered my cpu temps (Intel core2duo) were way too high, over 63 degrees  ohmy.gif . They should run at around 30-50deg!

Apart from causing the processors to slow down this is extremely bad for the life of your expensive hardware.

There are many utilities like this out there I guess, but according to expert forums this one is one of the few to correctly measure the all important core cpu temps.

Anyway when I had a look at the motherboard I found that the heat sink on the cpu was totally clogged with dust, surprising considering we have a carpetless floor and no soft furnishings except for a leather suite! The design of the intel sink is really crap, its so easily gets clogged up and is quite difficult to clear.

So if you're not already doing this, I strongly recommend you save this to your desktop (no installation needed) and run it either all the time or on a regular basis. If nothing else it lets you know when its time to open up your PC and give it a good clean. MAKE SURE YOU RUN IT IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAMING SESSION WHEN YOUR HARDWARE IS MOST STRESSED.

Amongst other things, it also measures graphics card temperature as well as cpu and case fan speeds, so its an awesome health check for your hardware.

If you can't download from here for some reason here's a link:

i use Nvidias own gpu and cpu monitor and i also use speedfan, they both do a good job of logging your cpu and gpu temps, but i have to say Nvidias software does a better job, if you are overheating, zalman do some awesome CPU fansand they arent that expensive either, and stylish, i got one in my system and my CPU temps never goes over 50c even under load, when its idle it barely reaches 30c

just tidying your case can help. i did mine on new years eve before going out and my idle temps have gone from 30-40 degrees to 15-20 degrees. just by improving the airflow.

speedfan doesn't display the correct temps for the cores, they are  15 degrees too low, either use coretemp or adjust speedfan.

like so:
open it up..
-> configure -> advanced tab -> choose Intel Core (or whatever) then make each core offset by 15.

also you dont need to be ingame to test what ur maxtemp is, infact if u alt+tab out of game to check it, it's going to be lower than what it should be because yes it does drop that fast. download prime95 and run small ffts, if it stays under you recommended max temp for your processor for anymore than 12 hours without failing or bsod then it's pretty stable

Thanks for the tips and all the above comments.

But the intention of this thread was really just to get those who are not that technically minded thinking about the need to clean the inside of the PC.

Measuring and monitoring CPU temperature is a highly complicated thing and I've seen many pages of discussion on it but, regardless of the actual accuracy and nature of the various monitor programs there are, I see this a simple way to see if your temps are generally on the way up, or not, and maybe save a few folks hardware. smile.gif

Use Everest Ultimate

easely enough to find on torrents

easy to use and just one program that monitors everything (is compatible with the Logitech G15 and Vista Sidebar btw)
